Getting ready to pop the question? We at Brilliant Event Planning love proposals! Here’s some advice from our expert Proposal Planner, Sarah Glick, on how to create the perfect proposal backdrop they can’t say no to.
Make it Personal
When planning a proposal for our clients, we engage in an extensive interview process to uncover the essence and heart of the couple’s love story. When planning your own proposal, you’ll want to consider all the key factors of your relationship: everything from the details of your first date to favorite hobbies and music. Think about what binds you two together as a couple, and what makes your love story unique! Creating an aesthetically beautiful backdrop is of course worthwhile, but making the proposal personal is what creates the lasting memory we promise your bride or groom-to-be will never forget. For some inspiration, see how our fairytale obsessed couple created their ever after:
One factor about creating a proposal backdrop you may not have considered is to make sure your backdrop stands tall in height, especially if you plan to have a photographer present. Logistically, you want your backdrop to stand taller than you and your significant other’s own height, so that the backdrop can be seen in photos – no matter which angle the photographer stands from. Plus, an oversized backdrop really transforms the space and surrounds you in the personalized scene you created. Our client Ian made sure to make his love scroll stand out against the backdrop of New York City, so that his now-fiance Lauren could be enveloped in flowers and Ian’s own personal love letter to her.
It’s All in the Details
I’m sure you’ve guessed by now that we at Brilliant Event Planning have a soft spot for details. First and foremost, details are important because they create the atmosphere of personalization we mentioned before. Paying attention to the smallest of pieces from your love story’s puzzle creates a better and more personal picture. Details are also important for giving your significant other multiple elements to examine after you pop the question and prolong the moment. Philip prepared a Shakespearean journey to propose to Jenni: the two walked through Central Park in the rain where Jenni found a wooden chest. Inside Philip had included flower seed packets with love notes written on them. Philip even engraved the chest with his own personalized message for their future as husband and wife! The smile on Jenni’s face says it all.
Whether it be glasses of champagne served shortly after you get down on one knee or love letters written on paper airplanes for a pilot’s proposal, our suggestions are sure to set your proposal apart and make this moment truly *brilliant*!
A big thank you to Mikkel Paige Photography for the amazing proposal photos for Dana and Jason, and Jessica and Ian, and to Blue Daisy for providing the perfect paparazzi photos for Jenni and Philip. Beautiful flowers for Lauren and Ian’s proposal were provided by The Arrangement.
Jay and KT, pilot and flight attendant, met in the air and have been on cloud nine ever since! How does a pilot propose? With paper planes, of course!
After treating KT to a surprise shopping trip to find the perfect dress, a delicious lunch with a friend, and hair and makeup, Jay had her meet him at a restaurant with a view! When KT walked into the room, she was greeted by a romantic pathway of rose petals and candles. At the end, Jay was waiting for her with many paper airplanes, as well as a diamond!
After reading each of the love notes on the paper planes, Jay dropped to one knee and proposed! After receiving a “YES!”, these lovebirds enjoyed a private dinner for two overlooking Columbus Circle.
Congratulations KT and Jay and a big thank you to Mikkel Paige Photography for the amazing photos!

Iain and Jane’s proposal took place on a breezy autumn afternoon in Manhattan. The couple flew in from the UK on what Jane thought was just another (amazing) vacation. Little did she know, Iain had plans to make the trip their most memorable one ever! That day, the couple was scheduled to tour the parks of NYC. The final stop was to be Bryant Park where the couple had plans to get dinner after their long day of touring. Full disclosure: Iain’s last name is also “Bryant” and he planned to use the park to his full advantage! When the couple arrived, our team was already covertly in place, posing as the maitre d’, ready to whisk the couple up to the rooftop of the Bryant Park Grill where Jane would get a “better view” of the park. As the couple made their way to the edge of the rooftop, Jane looked down to see an enormous banner that read “Jane, Please become a Bryant. Will you marry me?”. A band, that had been posing at restaurant, patrons, rose and began to sing the couple’s special song as Iain got down on one knee to pop the question. Needless to say, the bride-to-be accepted Iain’s proposal and they celebrated their engagement with a private lunch at the Grill.
Congratulations to Iain & Jane!

I recently got to experience a press trip to the stunning Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa. The resort’s prime location, on the widest part of 7 Mile Beach, and recent major renovation, make it a serious contender for the best resort on the island. Upgrades to the resort included the creation of a killer pool and hot tub and chic cabanas on the beach that stay light throughout the night. If you enjoy a more active vacation, the resort also has an array of watersport rentals available. Essentially, the Westin Grand Cayman has all the amenities of a high-end luxury resort with a much more laid back vibe. The best news? There are non-stop (3.5 hour) flights from New York City available every day of the week! Whether you are looking for the perfect destination wedding location or a luxurious honeymoon spot, the only question is, what are you waiting for?

Travis and Tamara’s proposal was a beautiful family affair. Tamara’s father lives in Puerto Rico and she had not seen him a while so Travis knew he wanted to include him in this special moment. Tamara thought that they were simply in New York City for a special night out. They checked into their hotel and once they were settled in their room, they received a surprise phone call from the concierge. They were invited to a “special AMEX cocktail hour” in the hotel’s rooftop venue, a stunning room with amazing views of the NYC skyline. When the elevator door opened, Tamara was stunned to see the room filled with lush florals in her favorite color, purple, and a band playing the couple’s special song. Travis got down on one knee and proposed and Tamara responded with a resounding “yes”! But, the surprises for Tamara were not over yet! Tamara was overwhelmed with emotion when her family and adorable young son ran out to greet newly engaged couple and congratulate them! It was especially emotional as Tamara had not seen her father in some time. The family then enjoyed a private dinner in the space at a table covered in love poems chosen by Travis to celebrate their relationship.
Congratulations to Travis & Tamara!
