Hey there love birds, planning on proposing? We at Brilliant Event Planning already showed you how to make your proposals pop, now let us help you avoid the trap of the dreaded cliché proposal. Here are our Dos and Don’ts for sending you on your way to wedded bliss!
Do: Prep your man or lady properly
Whether you ultimately decide on bringing your significant other to dinner, or some other special event, it’s important to let them know that you two will be going somewhere special. We guarantee your significant other will want to look extra spiffy the day they get proposed to, so make sure you accurately set up the situation, without giving anything away!
Don’t: Borrow your Playbook
While every hopeless romantic loves a good RomCom, don’t take the easy way out by copying a scene straight out of a movie or novel. You want your significant other to feel special on this day, they deserve your own personal design!
Do: Do the Unexpected
We guarantee any fianceé-to-be would swoon over a unique proposal tailored just for them, but how about kicking it up a notch? No one knows your significant other like you do, and now’s the time to prove it! Think about what they love, what makes them tick, and find a way to incorporate your insider info and you may just catch him or her by surprise.
Don’t: Choose a Touristy Spot
Unless a particular landmark has special significance to the two of you as a couple, leave it out. Especially in New York, there are thousands of proposals daily at spots like the Empire State Building, Times Square, etc. – save the crowds and choose a romantic scene that you’ve hand-picked.
Do: Have fun!
We know that proposing to your lady or man is a big step in your relationship, and we understand the nerves that come along with it! However, remember that this day is for both of you to start a new journey, focus on the beauty in this big moment and all the pressures will melt away!

Jay and KT, pilot and flight attendant, met in the air and have been on cloud nine ever since! How does a pilot propose? With paper planes, of course!
After treating KT to a surprise shopping trip to find the perfect dress, a delicious lunch with a friend, and hair and makeup, Jay had her meet him at a restaurant with a view! When KT walked into the room, she was greeted by a romantic pathway of rose petals and candles. At the end, Jay was waiting for her with many paper airplanes, as well as a diamond!
After reading each of the love notes on the paper planes, Jay dropped to one knee and proposed! After receiving a “YES!”, these lovebirds enjoyed a private dinner for two overlooking Columbus Circle.
Congratulations KT and Jay and a big thank you to Mikkel Paige Photography for the amazing photos!

Iain and Jane’s proposal took place on a breezy autumn afternoon in Manhattan. The couple flew in from the UK on what Jane thought was just another (amazing) vacation. Little did she know, Iain had plans to make the trip their most memorable one ever! That day, the couple was scheduled to tour the parks of NYC. The final stop was to be Bryant Park where the couple had plans to get dinner after their long day of touring. Full disclosure: Iain’s last name is also “Bryant” and he planned to use the park to his full advantage! When the couple arrived, our team was already covertly in place, posing as the maitre d’, ready to whisk the couple up to the rooftop of the Bryant Park Grill where Jane would get a “better view” of the park. As the couple made their way to the edge of the rooftop, Jane looked down to see an enormous banner that read “Jane, Please become a Bryant. Will you marry me?”. A band, that had been posing at restaurant, patrons, rose and began to sing the couple’s special song as Iain got down on one knee to pop the question. Needless to say, the bride-to-be accepted Iain’s proposal and they celebrated their engagement with a private lunch at the Grill.
Congratulations to Iain & Jane!

Sunil’s proposal was one of the most unique and fun ones we have planned! Reema thought that she was on her way to a salsa class with a friend that she purchased on Groupon. We even had a fake certificate created to make sure to sell the surprise! When she arrived at the hotel, signs pointed her to the rooftop space where her “salsa class” was being held. When the elevator doors opened, Reema was greeted with the surprise of her life! Sunil had giant boards hand-painted to represent special moments in their relationship. The first panel she saw when she entered the room featured the couple’s Match.com profiles which was how they met. As each of the boards was pulled away, Reema got to walk through the history of their relationship. When the final board was pulled away, Sunil was standing at the end, (gorgeous) ring in hand, ready to propose!
Congratulations to Sunil & Reema!

Abe knew that he wanted to incorporate Vegas into his proposal to Nellie. The two of them absolutely loved vacationing there and if Abe couldn’t bring Nellie to Vegas, he was going to bring Vegas to NYC! Nellie had no idea what was in store for her the night that Abe invited her to a “work party” on the rooftop of a luxurious NYC hotel. When the elevator doors opened, Nellie found herself in a room transformed into a Vegas casino! Abe walked Nellie to a custom craps table with “Will You Marry Me” written on it and a deck of cards listing all of the reasons he loves her. Abe then got down on one knee and popped the question! After he got the “yes” confetti cannons went off and the couples friends ran in to join them for a casino-themed party!
Congratulations to Abe & Nellie!

Going to see a musical on Broadway in New York City is always exciting – but even more so for our couple, Cynthia and Humberto! Cynthia started off the day in NYC thinking that Humberto was simply taking her on a city tour that included a “memory scrapbook”. At every New York City attraction they visited, they took a Polaroid picture to remember their trip by. Cynthia was excited that Humberto was taking her to see Wicked The Musical after their tour, but she had no idea what was actually in store! The couple enjoyed the show tremendously and were then offered a chance to tour the backstage area. As Cynthia and Humberto walked across the stage where the show had just taken place, Humberto got down on one knee and proposed! Cynthia said “Yes!” and the couple got their fairy tale ending!
Congratulations to Cynthia and Humberto!
